Rail Line Collapses in China

This article was intersting. There were people and markets that were affected by the collapse of a section of this high speed rail line. There were a few possible causes such as corruption in construction, the rain, or faulty signals. Most of the authorities and workers that would know anything would comment very little or not at all. The stocks of the companies directly and even indirectly related have decreased in value. I though this was a good example of economics and also a good example of double checking systems and new pieces of construction. This accident may easily have been prevented. You can also easily see the repression of information that is used so carefully in the media through this article.

  1. I do think it is interesting how limited media and freedom of speech is in China, and this really is a good example of I hope there are no problems like this when we get to China!

  2. Did anyone get hurt? or did China hide that too? I also agree with you Amy, I hope this doesnt happen to us, that would just ruin the trip.

  3. I'm not too familiar with China myself, but many of my friends that have been there (or lived there) tell me that the infrastructure is rather bad. Can anyone who has been to China confirm this?

It is certainly interesting that a country with such rapid GDP growth (apparently) isn't taking the time to ensure solid infrastructure for long-term growth.
