Hong Kong: Hot Economy, Terrible Pollution

While Hong Kong ranks as one of the premier outposts for global business, this article confirms that it is also the most polluted international financial center in the world. Hong Kong has been much slower than other developed economies to make policies to improve the environment, largely because policies aimed at spurring economic growth and creating jobs also add to pollution. Hong Kong’s serious case of air pollution—largely caused by the prevalence of aging buses and trucks on the street—results in over 3,000 premature deaths per year.

I am not a “green activist” by any stretch, but I still believe that we, as citizens of the earth and responsible business professionals, have an obligation to preserve the environment as best as possible. I was quite surprised that Hong Kong’s pollution is so high. I was also surprised to learn that air pollution is a common cause of cancer, heart disease, and respiratory disease. Hopefully the air clears up a bit when we get there so we can enjoy Victoria Peak. :)

  3. I have read an article similar to this; talking about Hong Kong's air pollution. It would be good to look at how the death rate of the air pollution compares against other deaths caused in Hong Kong.
