Hong Kong Chief Executive Candidates Spar in Last Debate

Hong Kong's most esteemed business and political leaders met on Monday for one last time before the election of the city's next chief executive leaders. I'm not totally sure if I understand the election system but I believe that the city's chief executives are not chosen by the people but rather by a group of 1200 politicians, businessmen, and representatives from social and professional groups. This system was set up under the city's mini constitution before 1997 and is intended to represent the people but also allows Beijing to control politics in Hong Kong. It doesn't seem like the people have much say in the voting. However, according to the article, "China has promised democratic elections for the chief executive from 2017."
I think this is an interesting voting system that might have been necessary to keep Hong Kong in a strong financial position. It is good to see that the city will be switching over to a democratic election because it will allow more freedom and voice from the people.
