his article talks about the upcoming Hong Kong International Film Festival and the showcase films are reflection of the changing cultural and political trends around Asia (as is often the case with art). Most of the independent films being shown to the public focus on themes of displacement, “whether by economics, age, or natural disasters like the earthquake/tsunami/nuclear meltdown that struck Japan.” Also becoming more common about Asian films is a fascination with or adoption of Western culture. As an example, one Japanese film about a high school drama club plays off the “High School Musical” fad, while another 3D animated film called “Legend of a Rabbit” is built off the “Kung Fu Panda” premise.
I have always been fascinated with art and the way it mirrors the culture of the times. To be honest, I don’t know much about Asian traditional and pop culture, but I would like to learn more. I am especially looking forward to experiencing it in person on our trip.
